Trailer - Don*Gnu Dance Company

Just finished a trailer for danish dance company Don*Gnu's upcoming show - Men in Sandals (Mænd i Sandaler). Great fun working with choreographers Kristoffer and Jannik who are the core of Don*Gnu, and the result is posted below. The show premieres 4th of November at the Junge Hunde Festival in Copenhagen.

The trailer was on shot on the Canon Rebel T2i/550D in natural lighting. We wanted the feeling of work-in-progress and the off-white walls and ceiling of the studio balanced the incoming daylight ok. The trailer was shot with the Samyang (Rokinon) 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye for the wide dance shots, a Zuiko 50mm f1.8 auto-s for the interviews, a Cimako (Topcon) 135mm f2.8 for the CU cut-aways and the kit lens Canon 18-55mm IS SLR for normal wide shots.

The ultra-wide shots were further stabilized using ProDAD Mercalli. I'm used to doing this through the deshaker plug-in for VirtualDub which of course is free. But deshaker in Vdub is very slow, and outputs to uncompressed video taking alot of hard-drive space if you have to do several clips. Also, in my experience, deshaker will always kill the blacks somewhat. ProDad Mercalli was lightning fast in analysis, and rendered very rapidly. The rolling shutter compensation in Mercalli was ok for the fish-eye shots, but on a long lens with some horizontal movement, the jelloing became quite pronounced. Though I would believe shooting with a high shutter speed would reduce this problem. Aside from that issue, the cropping was very slight and the image degradation negligible when rendering off Lagarith and Matrox I-frame HD. I didn't notice the same killing of black that deshaker does either. To note here, is that Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Suite ships with ProDAD Mercalli bundled in it, and given that this incarnation of Vegas contains almost everything you need from Vegas Pro plus ProDad's very effective image stabilization at the cost of about $80, it is a very interesting and pretty unbeatable proposition if you're lacking an affordable editing suite.

If you by chance are in Århus, Denmark on the 4th or 5th of November, check out the show ;-)
